Pedi Pond by Fisho – the first fish spa was launched at the Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi. It got an enthusiastic welcome from visitors to the waterpark who lined up to experience the unique spa treatment which involves tiny Garra Rufa fish nibbling the dead skin off one’s feet to leave them silky soft.
Mike Oswald, Park General Manager says “Few people know that the Garra Rufa treatment is native to this part of the world with the fish originally coming from Turkey, Iraq and Syria. It’s a real fun experience – and could be quite funny as the nibbling fish can leave you with a tickling sensation. The first few park visitors to try it this weekend absolutely loved it!”
At the Pedi Pond by Fisho, they use more than 13,000 Garra Rufa fish in the tanks at all times. The fish, popularly called ‘doctor fish’. Other nicknames include nibble fish, kangal fish and physio fish; in non-medical contexts, Garra rufa is called the reddish log sucker. They live and breed in the pools of some Turkish river systems and hot springs. At the Pedi Pond however, the fishes have been specially bred on a farm in Germany and are the first ones to be available for commercial foot spa treatments in Abu Dhabi.
Each foot spa session lasts for ten minutes and visitors can also buy photos of their first reaction on putting their feet into the water and experiencing the tiny fish nibbling away.
