A designer handbag is every girl’s dream and, if you are a celebrity, even more so. At every red carpet event celebs want to get noticed for their style statements. And what better way to say “I’ve arrived” than to sport an Hermès, Gucci or a Valentino bag.
The fashion world marks the new era of handbags with Hollywood actress Grace Kelly’s and Price Ranier’s wedding in 1956.Shutterbugs went berserk trying to capture Princess Grace Kelly and she became one of the most photographed women in the world. Then, Life magazine carried a snap of her clutching an Hermès bag. This later came to be known as the Hermès Kelly bag. Every woman with a fashion sense and money wanted one of her own and Hermès was bombarded with orders, resulting in the famed ‘six year waiting list’ for the gorgeous pieces.
Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian are diehard fans of the ultimate ‘It’ bag – the Birkin from the house of Hermès. A Birkin can cost you anywhere between $9000 to $150,000.
The Birkin is named after Jane Birkin, a yesteryear English singer-actress. In 1981 Jean-Louis Dumas, Hermès’ Chief Executive and Jane Birkin were seated together on a flight from Paris. When she tried to put her hand baggage into the overhead compartment it fell out, revealing the contents to all. Birkin then lamented to Dumas that she had not yet found a leather weekend bag she fancied. So in 1984, as a mark of their friendship, he created a black supple leather bag for her, based on an 1892 design. The Birkin has, since then, become a fashion statement worldwide.
Celebrities like Oprah, Martha Stewart, Ingrid Bergman and Jackie Kennedy are or were patrons of the Hermès Birkin. Victoria Beckham and the Kardashian sisters are ardent collectors of this iconic bag. Posh Spice’s Birkin collection is rumoured to be worth £1.5 million! She practically owns one in every colour and finish. Another wealthy fashionista has an entire closet dedicated for her Hermès Birkins!
Some of the most desired models include the Hermès Birkin black crocodile bag, the Birkin beige alligator bag, the Birkin Fuchsia crocodile bag and the pink ostrich bag. The Birkin not only make for a perfect handbag but also a collectable, because as it ages, it becomes even more expensive. The Birkins are distributed to Hermès boutiques in limited quantities and at unpredictable schedules, creating an aura of scarcity and exclusivity. And, as true fashionistas say – ‘It’ bags may come and go, but an Hermès Birkin lasts forever.
