The new BMW Z4 offers all the driving pleasure of a BMW Roadster, armed with innovative new exterior features, a refined interior, advanced ConnectedDrive technology and a new entry-level sDrive18i engine.
It has been over a decade now since the BMW Z4 introduced the emotionally appealing way to experience open-top driving. The interplay of classical proportions and state-of-the-art technology defines the unmistakable character of the BMW Z4. The sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase, low beltline and low-slung rear-end vividly shape its appearance.
Now, the third generation BMW Z4 reinforces the brand’s position among the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturers.
The new BMW Z4 comes with a choice of five engines – three four-cylinder and two six-cylinder powerplants, all with the TwinPower Turbo technology, which ensures effective balance between performance and fuel consumption throughout the output range.
The BMW Z4 sDrive18i is the entry-level model, powered by a 2.0-litre engine, which develops 156hp at 5,000rpm, delivering a peak torque of 240Nm (177lb-ft) between 1,250 and 4,400rpm, and goes from 0 to100kph in 7.9 seconds to reach a maximum speed of 221kph.
It is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, while an eight-speed sports automatic shift can also be ordered as an option. The existing engine variants: sDrive20i, sDrive28i, sDrive35i and sDrive25i retain their places in the range.
The Drive Dynamic Control lets you tailor the steering, throttle and stability control systems to suit all situations, allowing the BMW Z4 to deliver an optimum mix of comfort and control, combining performance with agile handling. The engaging character of the Roadster as a driver’s tool is given particular emphasis by the optional M Sport package, with its M Sport suspension.
The open-top two-seater features classic roadster proportions, with the automatically retractable hardtop blending seamlessly into the car’s form – it takes just 19 seconds to transform from a convertible open-air driving machine to a sporting coupé, while the car is moving at up to 40kph. As it closes, it seals a smoothly flowing roofline, while large windows optimise all-round visibility and it becomes one of the quietest cars in its class. Once opened, the two roof elements are accommodated in the road-hugging rear – which also means that there is not much space in the boot once the roof is retracted.
The distinctive new circular bi-xenon headlights of the BMW Z4 feature LED light rings, which emit daytime driving light. The headlights combine with the broad BMW kidney grille to form a roadster-specific interpretation of the brand’s signature look. From the side, exterior changes include the iconic A-pillars, with their understated black colouring, which highlight the car’s low-slung silhouette. On the bodywork, tapered side indicators add a dynamic sweep to the front gills and the newly designed optional 17-inch and 18-inch wheels in V-spoke design redefine the model from the wheelbase up.
Another strong point adopted from its predecessor is the low seating position, just ahead of the rear axle, giving the driver and passenger a more intense drive-experience. The technologically advanced cockpit embodies beautifully embellished finishing and refined features, including the striking high-gloss that surrounds the central air vents.
The new Design Pure Traction package includes a new exclusive Valencia Orange metallic exterior colour, with Alcantara door trim inserts in Orange, door opening and gearshift lever trim in high-gloss Black, Black Leather or Alcantara seats with Orange stitching. In addition, two other new exterior colours have been included: Mineral Grey and Glacier Silver.
From the advanced BMW ConnectedDrive functionality with Cruise Control and Braking functionality to the High Beam Assist, which automatically switches between high and low beam at night, and the iDrive control system, this dynamic model provides a range of new driver assistance to ensure sheer driving pleasure, while lending the BMW Roadster even greater appeal and individuality. It certainly lives up to its sporting credentials.
