Swiss watchmaker Omega’s association with the world of sports is well-known. The watch manufacturer’s association with the PGA in 2011 also emphasised the importance Omega gives to the field of sports in the brand’s global marketing strategy, and they took it up a notch this year by signing on ace golfer Rory McIlroy.
Rory McIlroy, who hails from Northern Ireland, is one of golf’s most talented and accomplished players. Rory has entered into an agreement with Omega and joins the line of illustrious celebrities from the fields of sports and entertainment, who have been ambassadors of the brand for long. The roster of celebrities include golf legends like Greg Norman and many leading figures from the world of entertainment like Nicole Kidman, George Clooney and Daniel Craig, to name a few.
The President of Omega, Stephen Urquhart, is thrilled about this new association and says, “Rory is one of those golfers who lights up every course he plays on. In recent years, he has been golf’s most exciting player and he has already attracted legions of new fans. He’s the sort of golfer who is good for the sport and for its image. I can hardly wait to see how far his extraordinary talent will take him. We are all delighted that he is now part of the Omega family.”
Rory McIlroy, who played a pivotal role in the 2012 Ryder Cup, in which Omega served as the official timekeeper, also had very good words to say about this partnership, and says, “Omega has a rich history in sports, both with the Olympics and in golf. I have always had great experiences, playing in its events. I have been a fan of the brand for a long time and so to now be an Omega ambassador is special for me. I am truly excited about this new partnership and look forward to many great years together.”
Omega, based in Biel, Switzerland, have been driven by a pioneering spirit, which led them to make the first divers’ watch, the world’s only certified marine chronometer. The company holds more records for accuracy than most of their competitors. According to Omega, the company’s pioneering spirit has “taken us to the moon – being a part of six lunar landings – helped us conquer the oceans’ depths and allowed us to time the world’s most important sporting events.”
