The new luxury saloon – the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 – fusing the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach, is the top flagship model in the brand’s expanding range
The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 comes out as, quite probably, the world’s quietest production saloon, especially when you are seated in the rear. Rightly so, since the target clientele consists of successful businesspeople, who would mainly use the car in a professional context – invariably, with a chauffeur.
It follows that if you want to gain some quality time, when being driven to your next meeting, you would look for features that enhance comfort. For that same reason, one cannot fail to notice the impressive spaciousness, the range of premium appointments, the elegance of design and the high-quality materials that, together, create an ambience of luxury, particularly at the rear, where sensuously curved, fine-wood trim with a handcrafted feel surrounds the entire rear seating system of the Mercedes-Maybach S 600.
Mercedes-Maybach is really not an equipment line – it is more akin to a sub-brand that, in future, will offer Mercedes-Benz vehicles in even more exclusive forms. Providing both prestige and exclusivity, it is aimed at customers for whom status is important. Alongside Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach thus becomes the second sub-brand under Mercedes-Benz.
The visual treat of the S 600 starts with its size – with a length of 5453mm and a 3365mm wheelbase, it proves to be over 200mm larger in both dimensions than the best-selling S-Class saloon with long wheelbase. While, for the driver and front passenger, there have been no compromises compared with a standard S-Class, the real sense of spaciousness is to be found in the rear, where the benefits of extending the wheelbase by 200mm are obvious. Additionally, thanks to the roofline, even the head-clearance is further raised. That the designers expect to see the owner occupy the second row is evident from the reclining executive seats on the left and right, featuring adjustable calf-supports and luxury head-restraints with extra cushions.
Set the front passenger seat at the ‘chauffeur position’ and the rear seat occupant on the front-passenger side gets 77mm more foot-room. In addition, the front-passenger seat can be folded forward and the rear seat placed in an extended reclining position for long breaks. Individual seat functions are, of course, electrically operated via the typical Mercedes control panels in the rear doors.
There are options to boost rear passengers’ comfort even more – the Rear Seat Comfort package includes individually adjustable multi-contour seats and a ‘hot-stone’ style energising massage function.
To deliver maximum climatic control at the rear, there is a second, standard-fitted Thermotronic automatic climate control system with two additional climate zones for the rear seats. A control panel on the back of the centre console allows the temperature and air distribution to be set individually for the left and right sides. For targeted climate control, there are two nozzles in the centre console and also on the B-pillars and in the rear foot-well.
Even the engine is rated higher than the standard car – the 5980cc V12 bi-turbo engine has an output of 530hp (390kW) with the maximum torque of 830Nm available from 1900rpm and completes the sprint from 0 to 100kph in 5.0 seconds, while the electronically limited top speed is 250kph, aided by the latest evolution of the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.
Even the exterior design of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines effortless style with trend-setting exclusivity, making modern luxury come alive in an exceptional way. Along with the extended wheelbase, the emphatic lines suggest power and dynamism. With the special design of the sidewall the characteristic elements, such as the sweeping dome-shaped roofline of the S-Class, are retained.
Compared with the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the rear door has been shortened by 66mm and therefore appears to meld seamlessly into the overall composition, while the triangular window has been relocated into the C-pillar, which is adorned with the elegant ‘Maybach Manufaktur’ logo – a double M inside an arched triangle.
Consequently, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cut-out, which creates a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity. Quite interestingly, despite the large windows, wind noise is relatively low even at the rear.
To top it, there is the novel voice amplification function, which makes it much easier for occupants in the front to communicate with the rear passengers, emphasising the car’s positioning as a chauffeur-driven vehicle. Voice signals are discreetly amplified, depending on the amount of driving noise, and continuously adjusted for the speaker’s volume and the ambient noise level.
Elsewhere, trim parts are in wood/chrome and exclusive leather, which, along with the chrome-plated tweeter grilles and fibre-optic ambience lighting, create a unique sense of capacious style.
The air-balance package includes luminous golden fragrancing with oud, the sensual agarwood perfume, as well as ionisation and even more efficient filtration, compared with the basic vehicle.
The high-end Burmester 3D surround sound system offers a unique acoustic experience by virtue of 24 high-performance speakers and 24 separate amplifier channels with a total output of 1540 watts.
Another special feature is the IWC designed analogue clock on the dashboard. The numbers fabricated out of fine metal are individually milled and applied, underlining the unique design of the analogue clock.
What is more, exclusive 20-inch (50.8cm) forged light-alloy wheels are standard on the Mercedes-Maybach saloon. Instead of delicate spokes, their design features large surfaces to underline the high-quality look of the flagship model.
As expected, all throughout the car Maybach’s premium hand-finished ‘Manufaktur’ touches are abundantly evident, enveloping passengers in modern lounge-style luxury. Uniqueness and individualisation instantly establish a connection between Mercedes-Maybach and the S-Class, fulfilling the requirements of even the most discerning customers worldwide and underlining its exclusivity and flagship status.
Small wonder, then, that the majority of customers are from China, Russia and the USA, where high importance is attached to status symbols!
